Para muchas personas, sigue sin ser algo común que un hombre viva con sus hijos y sin la compañía de ninguna mujer; generalmente se piensa que es al revés, que la mujer fue abandonada por el hombre y que ahora ella debe hacerse cargo de sus niños; pero a veces, hay hombres que pasan por lo mismo y deben suplir ambas funciones, la de un padre y la de una madre.
Esta extraña realidad para muchos fue lo que quiso retratar de una manera muy honesta y visual el fotógrafo Phyllis B. Dooney, y para eso viajó hasta un pequeño barrio de Brooklyn como East New York, donde un tercio de los habitantes vive por debajo del nivel federal de pobreza.
Fue en ese barrio donde estos hombres se han refugiado de las miradas, prejuicios, y lo peor de todo, también de la justicia, que suele favorecer a la esposa en estos casoa dejando a estos padres sin la posibilidad de ver a sus hijos, y luego que fueron ELLOS los que se hicieron cargo de su crianza y educación.
El 8,7% de los hogares en este barrio no incluye un cónyuge y solo el 1,7% incluye a una pareja.
Se trata de un barrio que fue duramente golpeado por la guerra contra las drogas y la epidemia de crack durante los 80’s. Actualmente, la inseguridad económica y la exposición frecuente a la delincuencia son el los miedos a los que ve afectado día a día estos padres que deben hacer lo mejor para proteger a sus hijos.
Lo que buscaba representar el fotógrafo era la tranquila intimidad de los padres y sus hijos en comparación a lo sucede afuera de esas casas, donde todo es crimen, drogas y peligro.
Para contar esta historia, decidí instalar cámaras oscuras y luego capturar un retrato.Quería representar visualmente la dinámica de fuera y el interior de la vida.
