El adiós de una leyenda: Steven Gerrard anunció su retiro del fútbol

El inglés Steven Gerrard, legendario jugador del Liverpool, que actualmente vestía la camiseta de Los Angeles Galaxy, anunció este jueves que se retira del fútbol profesional después de una exitosa carrera de 19 años. A los 36 años, ha decidido colgar las botas y lo comunicó en su cuenta de Instagram.

“Tras las recientes especulaciones de la prensa sobre mi futuro, confirmo mi retiro del fútbol profesional. Me siento tremendamente afortunado de haber experimentado tantas cosas positivas durante mi carrera. He tenido una vida profesional increíble y estoy agradecido por cada momento vivido en el Liverpool, en la selección inglesa y en el LA Galaxy“, expresó.

Se trata de una leyenda del fútbol inglés, ya que es el cuarto jugador que más veces ha vestido la camiseta de Inglaterra -114 partidos, sólo por detrás de Peter Shilton, Wayne Rooney y David Beckham-, y del jugador emblema del Liverpool, donde disputó 710 encuentros.

Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football.I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy. I feel very fortunate to have had the career I’ve had but none of it would have been possible without the support of so many people. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone at Liverpool Football Club. I am proud to have played for and captained Liverpool for so many years and to have achieved what we achieved during my time at the club. I was lucky to play alongside some great players and under some fantastic managers during my time at Anfield and would like to thank each and every one of them, as well as all of the backroom staff at the club for the fantastic support they showed me. I would like to say a special thank you to Steve Heighway, Dave Shannon and Hugh McAuley for believing in me when I was making my way at Liverpool and for giving me the platform to go on and fulfil my dreams. Thank you to the amazing fans of Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy for the incredible backing you have given me throughout my career. Your loyalty and support has meant the world. I would like to thank Struan Marshall, my agent throughout my career, and the team at Wasserman for all of their support over the past 18 years. I feel lucky to have had such a close group of friends that I have always been able to count and rely on throughout the course of my career. Thank you to all of you. Finally, the most important thank you; to my family. I cannot thank my Mum, Dad and brother Paul enough for their unconditional support over the years, it has meant everything to me. Su debut fue en el equipo de Anfield el 29 de noviembre de 1998, en un partido de liga frente al Blackburn Rovers: “Cumplí mi sueño de adolescente al ponerme la famosa camiseta roja del Liverpool y, cuando debuté frente al Rovers, en noviembre de 1998, nunca podría haberme imaginado lo que continuaría en los siguientes años.”

Con el Liverpool, ganó una Copa de la UEFA, dos Supercopas de Europa, dos FA Cup, tres Copas de la Liga, una Community Shield, y la recordada Champions League conquistada en el 2005, en una célebre noche en Estambul, en la que su equipo le remontó tres goles al Milan.

“Estoy orgulloso de haber jugado más de 700 partidos en el Liverpool, muchos de ellos como capitán, y de haber sido una parte importante a la hora de ayudar al equipo a conseguir grandes títulos. Ninguno de ellos más importante que el que conquistamos esa famosa noche en Estambul“, relató.

En el plano internacional, también fue el capitán de la selección nacional de Inglaterra en varios torneos: “Me siento un privilegiado de haber vestido la camiseta de Inglaterra en 114 ocasiones y de haber capitaneado mi país. Lucí con orgullo la camiseta inglesa cada vez que la vestí.”

En los últimos días, ya sin jugar con Los Angeles Galaxy en la MLS, se lo vínculo con el puesto de entrenador vacante en el MK Dons, un club de tercera categoría del fútbol inglés. Él solamente aclaró que seguirá ligado al fútbol.

“Estoy emocionado por lo que depara el futuro y siento que todavía tengo mucho que ofrecer a este deporte, de la forma en la que sea. Ahora me estoy tomando un tiempo para evaluar las diferentes opciones que tengo y haré un anuncio muy pronto”, concluyó Steven Gerrard en su adiós.
